You wouldn’t want your son to have Carragher’s career, Okocha blasts former Liverpool defender over AFCON disrespect

If there’s one thing you don’t mess with, it’s African football—and Jay-Jay Okocha just made that crystal clear! The Nigerian legend has fired shots at former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, who recently downplayed the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and let’s just say, Okocha didn’t hold back.

In an interview making waves on X (formerly Twitter), Okocha dropped the mic with this savage take: “There are some players that will say something, you just overlook it. If you look at their career, if you look at the type of football that they played, you can understand. I mean, you wouldn’t want your son to be like Carragher.” Ouch! That one’s gotta sting!

So, what exactly did Carragher say to spark this outrage? During a Sky Sports post-match chat on February 23, the ex-England international suggested that Mohamed Salah’s Ballon d’Or chances were slim because he hadn’t won any “major tournaments.” Hold up—did he just brush off AFCON like it’s some weekend kickabout?

Well, fellow pundits Micah Richards and Daniel Sturridge weren’t having it. They quickly reminded Carragher that AFCON is a big deal. But the internet wasn’t about to let this slide either. Social media erupted, calling out Carragher for dismissing Africa’s premier football competition.

One of the most vocal critics? Former Chelsea and Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel, who went off on his Obi One Podcast: “The Africa Cup of Nations is as big [as the Euros]. I’ve played in it and won it. It’s not in his f*ing place to discredit the AFCON. He sits there week in, week out, teaching and coaching people on how to win the Premier League, and he never won it!” Talk about a burn!

Mikel, a 2013 AFCON champion, didn’t stop there. He highlighted how AFCON inspires young African footballers: “Kids grow up watching their idols give everything for their country. The future generation of African players dreaming of the Premier League or Europe? They were inspired by AFCON.”
