Veteran Nollywood actor, dramatist, filmmaker, and academic, Dr. Kola Oyewo, has passed away at the age of 80.
The news of his death was announced on Friday by actor Kunle Afod in a heartfelt tribute shared on Instagram. Afod celebrated Oyewo’s enduring contributions to Nigeria’s theatre and film industries, describing him as a remarkable talent whose legacy will continue to inspire generations.
“Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow,” Afod wrote. “His remarkable talent, timeless performances, and immense contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry will never be forgotten. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Rest well, sir. Your work lives on.”
Details surrounding the cause of death were not immediately disclosed. However, in April 2026, Oyewo publicly spoke about his battle with prostate enlargement, revealing that the condition had significantly affected his health and limited his participation in film productions.
During a visit by actor Kunle Afod to his residence earlier this year, the veteran actor discussed how the illness restricted the roles he could accept, forcing him to step back from more physically demanding performances.
Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Dr. Oyewo began his acting career in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group. Over the decades, he became one of the most respected figures in Yoruba theatre and Nigerian cinema.
He gained widespread acclaim for his portrayal of Odewale in Ola Rotimi’s acclaimed play, The Gods Are Not to Blame, a performance that earned him recognition across Africa’s theatre community.
Throughout a career spanning more than six decades, Oyewo featured in several notable productions, including Saworoide, Sango, Koseegbe, Super Story, and numerous Yoruba-language films that helped shape and advance Nigeria’s film industry.
Beyond the stage and screen, Dr. Oyewo distinguished himself as a scholar and educator. He earned a doctorate in Drama from the University of Ibadan and lectured at Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer’s University, and Elizade University.
Through his work as a teacher, mentor, and performer, he influenced generations of actors, playwrights, and scholars, leaving an enduring legacy in Nigeria’s theatre, film, and academic communities.
Dr. Kola Oyewo will be remembered not only for his outstanding performances but also for his dedication to nurturing talent and advancing the arts in Nigeria.
