Workers at the Oyo State House of Assembly commenced an indefinite strike on Monday, demanding the implementation of financial autonomy for state houses of assembly, as reported by DAILY POST.
The aggrieved workers closed the entrance gate to the Assembly premises. Displaying various placards with different inscriptions, the workers, operating under the umbrella of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), Oyo State chapter, voiced their concerns while protesting around the Assembly complex.
The strike action was initiated following the expiration of an ultimatum issued by the national leadership of PASAN.
Yemi Alade, PASAN Chairman, affirmed that the legislative staff are advocating for the enforcement of financial autonomy for state legislatures. He urged Governor Seyi Makinde to adhere to the stipulations of Section 121 (3a, 3b, and 4a) of the 1999 constitution (as amended).
Furthermore, Alade emphasized the necessity of implementing the Consolidated Legislative Salary Structures (CONLESS) for Assembly and Commission staff, in addition to the complete realization of salary structures and other legislative allowances. He declared the strike as indefinite, vowing that the workers will continue to block the Assembly gates until their demands are met.
