France Football, the organizers of the Ballon d’Or, have decided against presenting Lionel Messi with the Super Ballon d’Or award, as reported by Marca.
Messi is set to be named the recipient of the 2023 Ballon d’Or at a ceremony scheduled to take place in Paris, France on Monday. This will mark his eighth win, surpassing anyone else in history.
Despite this, there were considerations to bestow upon him the trophy designated for the best player over the past three decades.
Alfredo Di Stefano remains the sole player to have ever been honored with the Super Ballon d’Or award.
The Real Madrid icon from the 1950s secured five consecutive European Championships with the Spanish giants and amassed a total of 308 goals. Di Stefano was bestowed with the award in 1989 by France Football, as voted on by several previous Ballon d’Or laureates.
