Buhari Signs Almajiri Bill in Last Act as President Points to Address Educational and Social Challenges

Abuja, Nigeria – In a significant move to address the educational and social challenges faced by Almajiri children, President Muhammadu Buhari signed the Almajiri Bill into law today, marking one of his final acts as the President of Nigeria.

The bill aims to reform the Almajiri system and provide better educational opportunities for millions of vulnerable children across the country. The Almajiri system, prevalent in some Northern Nigerian states, involves the practice of sending young children away from their families to study Islamic education under the guidance of a teacher known as a Mallam. However, in many cases, these children end up facing dire living conditions, poverty, and limited access to formal education.

President Buhari’s signing of the bill reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the root causes of the challenges faced by Almajiri children. The new law mandates that state governments take responsibility for the welfare, education, and rehabilitation of Almajiri children within their jurisdictions.

Under the provisions of the Almajiri Bill, state governments are required to establish comprehensive educational and vocational training programs for Almajiri children, ensuring they receive a balanced education that incorporates both Islamic and secular subjects. The aim is to equip them with the necessary skills for future employment opportunities, breaking the cycle of poverty and dependency.

The legislation also emphasizes the importance of integrating Almajiri children into mainstream society, promoting social inclusion, and ensuring their rights and dignity are protected. It encourages collaboration between the federal, state, and local governments, as well as relevant stakeholders, to ensure effective implementation of the reforms.

President Buhari expressed his optimism that the Almajiri Bill would contribute to the overall development of Nigeria and improve the lives of Almajiri children, who have long been marginalized and excluded from essential opportunities. He called for the collective efforts of all stakeholders, including religious and community leaders, to support the successful implementation of the new law.

As President Buhari’s term comes to an end, his signing of the Almajiri Bill stands as a significant milestone in his administration’s commitment to social welfare and educational reform. The hope is that this legislation will serve as a catalyst for positive change, empowering Almajiri children to become productive members of society and paving the way for a more inclusive and prosperous Nigeria.
