Benue varsity suspends all 200 to 600 level medical students

On Monday, Benue State University (BSU), Makurdi, issued a one-month suspension to all medical students in the 200- to 600-level.

An internal memorandum bearing this directive, signed by the Registrar, Dr. Mfaga Modom, and subsequently confirmed by the university’s spokesperson, Mr. Tser Vanger, was disseminated.

Dr. Modom conveyed in the memo that all medical students in the 200- to 600-level, hailing from the College of Health Sciences, are to commence a one-month suspension effective from 8:00 a.m. on October 30th, with plans to resume their activities on Wednesday, November 29th.

The decision, she explained, was the result of a comprehensive review conducted by the university’s management concerning the recent actions of these students and reports from relevant authorities regarding their demonstration that occurred on the 25th of October.

Dr. Modom also expressed disappointment in the students’ obstinate demeanor before, during, and after the demonstration. She informed that an investigative committee will be assembled to investigate both the immediate and underlying reasons for the demonstration and offer suitable guidance.

“A top Management Committee of the College of Health Sciences is hereby directed to implement the Resolutions of the Reports of the various committees on the students’ demonstration.

She warned that on resumption, each student should bring a Sworn Affidavit from a competent Court of Law attesting to be of good conduct. Each student should also come along with his/her Parent/Guardian, who will sign an undertaking.

“The Benue State University Medical Students Association (BESUMSA) has also been suspended with immediate effect till further notice,” she also said, warning the suspended medical students to immediately vacate their hostels on Monday, 30th October.

She said the academic activities of the 100-level medical students remain uninterrupted.
