Farmer-Herder Dispute Turns Deadly in Ningi, One Killed, Houses Razed

A 40-year-old farmer, Usman Jibrin, has died following a violent confrontation between farmers and herders at Guda Village in Ningi Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

The confrontation, which occurred on September 23, 2026, reportedly began after three farmers discovered cattle grazing on and destroying their crops on Guda Hill.

According to the Bauchi State Police Command, the farmers chased the cattle to the herders’ settlement, where an argument ensued and degenerated into a physical fight.

The three farmers sustained injuries during the confrontation.

The police said the incident subsequently triggered a retaliatory attack by some youths from Guda Village, who allegedly mobilised and set fire to houses in the herders’ settlement.

Police operatives from Ningi Division responded to the incident, restored normalcy and took the injured farmers to General Hospital, Ningi.

However, one of the injured farmers, Jibrin, later died while receiving treatment.

Following investigations into the incident, the police arrested four suspects on October 8 in connection with the violence.

The suspects are being investigated for alleged criminal conspiracy, causing grievous hurt, mischief by fire and culpable homicide.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, disclosed this in a statement issued on October 9, adding that the Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, had ordered the transfer of the suspects to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Bauchi for further investigation.

The commissioner expressed sympathy with the deceased’s family and people whose properties were destroyed during the incident.

He also cautioned residents against resorting to violence and urged farmers and herders to resolve disputes through dialogue rather than taking the law into their own hands.
