Supporters of former Sokoto State Governor Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto State.
The decision was made after a high-level consultative meeting involving elders and leaders of the Bafarawa Akida Movement.
Chairman of the movement, Professor Hamza Muhammad Maishanu, said the defection was the outcome of wide-ranging consultations and represented the collective will of members across the state.
He explained that the group had retained their political structure despite leaving the PDP and had adopted the name Bafarawa Akida to symbolize unity and loyalty to Bafarawa’s ideals.
The group cited Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s performance and cordial relationship with Bafarawa as reasons for their decision.
Maishanu confirmed that further consultations would be held to formalize the decision and complete the necessary political processes.
Meanwhile, former Governor Bafarawa clarified that he had quit active politics and denied claims of personally joining the APC.
He stated that he had given his supporters his blessing to join the APC and would continue to support Governor Ahmed Aliyu.
