Messi sets new World Cup record as Argentina beat Jordan

Lionel Messi added another remarkable chapter to his legendary career after becoming the first player to score in seven consecutive FIFA World Cup appearances, helping Argentina defeat Jordan 3-1 in their final Group J match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 39-year-old captain started the match on the bench but made an instant impact after coming on in the second half, scoring Argentina’s third goal to seal victory and preserve the reigning champions’ perfect record in the group stage.

Messi’s strike was his sixth goal of the tournament, having netted a hat-trick against Algeria and scored twice in Argentina’s victory over Austria earlier in the competition.

The Inter Miami forward’s latest goal also saw him make history, becoming the first player to score in seven successive World Cup appearances, stretching from his final four matches at the 2022 tournament to Argentina’s opening three games at the 2026 edition.

Argentina’s victory ensured they finished top of Group J with the maximum nine points from three matches, underlining their status as one of the favourites to retain the title.

The South American giants will now face Cape Verde in the Round of 32 as they continue their quest for back-to-back World Cup triumphs.

Messi’s outstanding performances have once again proved decisive for Argentina, with the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner continuing to defy age on football’s biggest stage. His six goals have placed him among the tournament’s leading scorers as he chases yet another historic achievement in an already glittering career.

With the knockout stage set to begin, Argentina will be hoping their talisman can maintain his rich vein of form as they pursue a fourth FIFA World Cup title.
