The Labour Party has launched a membership drive aimed at registering 10 million new and re-registered members into the party.
At the inauguration of the national steering committee for membership revalidation in Abuja on Wednesday, the party disclosed that the move, which kick-started on December 17, would be followed by a world congress on January 13, 2026.
The local government and state congresses are slated for January 17 and 24 respectively, while national convention will hold on February 28 2026.
Interim National Chairman, Senator Esther Nenadi Usman who spoke via Zoom said that the move is “necessary and strategic to reposition, reorganise, and strengthen itself for the bigger responsibilities and opportunities that lie ahead.”
Senator Usman stated that the party’s leadership considered expanding and consolidating the party’s membership base as one of the foremost priorities.
She expressed confidence that with the launch of membership drive and the approved timetable for congresses and convention, “we will not only recover lost ground but emerge stronger, more united, and better prepared for the task ahead.”
Usman regretted that the Labour Party has, in recent times, passed through intense challenges and distractions.
“I am pleased to state that the majority of these issues have been decisively resolved by the courts, while the few remaining matters are still before the judiciary.
“We remain confident that they too will soon be conclusively settled in the interest of justice and democracy,” she added.
Usman enjoined existing members of the party to take advantage of the exercise to revalidate their membership.
“I also warmly invite all Nigerians of goodwill, especially those who believe in good governance, social justice, accountability, and people-oriented leadership, to seize this opportunity to register and formally become members of the Labour Party.
“As clearly outlined in the schedule of activities, this exercise will run from now through to 20th January, 2026, across all wards, LGAs and states of the Federation,” she announced .
Chairman of the steering committee Ikechukwu Emetu, described the 10 million membership drive as “not merely a numerical target,” but a national call to action.
Emetu who is also deputy governor of Abia State, stated that the aim of the exercise is to strengthen democracy and give a voice to the people.
“Through the work of the National Steering Committee, we will engage citizens across the length and breadth of our nation.
“We will listen attentively to their concerns, inspire confidence, and work collectively to build the basic and deep prosperity of Nigeria,” he promised.
The committee was inaugurated by Darlington Nwokocha, interim national secretary of the party.
Other members of the committee are Comrade Ladi lliya, Dr. Kingsley Okundaye Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku and Kamal Yusuf Ahmed.
