Cross River Residents Laud Governor Otu for Free Christmas Transport Initiative

Residents of Calabar and other parts of Cross River State have commended Governor Bassey Otu for introducing a free Christmas bus service, describing the initiative as timely and impactful amid rising transportation costs and the financial pressures of the festive season.

The free bus programme, launched as part of the state government’s yuletide activities, was designed to ease movement for residents while reducing the burden of daily transport expenses. Operating across major routes within Calabar and adjoining areas, the service has enabled commuters to travel without paying fares, allowing families to redirect limited resources to food, celebrations and other essential needs.

Many residents who spoke about the initiative expressed gratitude to the governor, noting that the service has made a noticeable difference in their day-to-day lives. Some commuters said they have been able to move freely across the city without worrying about transport fares, while others described the buses as a relief during a period when expenses are typically higher than usual.

Traders and small business owners have also welcomed the programme, saying it has improved customer turnout in markets and commercial centres. According to them, the ease of movement has encouraged more people to go about their businesses and holiday shopping, contributing to a livelier economic atmosphere in the city during the Christmas period.

The free transport scheme aligns with the state government’s broader commitment to people-focused policies aimed at improving welfare and promoting inclusiveness. Officials have said the initiative reflects the administration’s desire to ensure that residents can enjoy the festive season without added hardship.

As Cross River continues to host various end-of-year festivities that draw large crowds, residents say the free bus service has complemented these celebrations by making transportation safer, easier and more affordable. Many have called on the government to consider sustaining or expanding similar initiatives during future festive periods.
