NEMA Activates Nationwide Emergency Response to Safeguard Festive Celebrations

The National Emergency Management Agency has activated a nationwide emergency response plan ahead of the festive season, as part of efforts to ensure quick intervention during accidents, disasters, and other emergencies expected during the period.

The agency said the move was necessary due to the anticipated increase in road travel, public gatherings, and commercial activities typically associated with the end-of-year celebrations. According to NEMA, these activities often lead to a higher risk of road crashes, fire outbreaks, crowd-related incidents, and other emergencies that require rapid response.

As part of the activation, NEMA has placed its emergency operations centres and response teams on high alert across the country. The agency said its personnel, equipment, and relief materials have been strategically positioned to enable swift deployment whenever incidents occur. Coordination with other emergency and security agencies has also been strengthened to ensure effective response and information sharing.

NEMA explained that it is working closely with organisations such as the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Nigeria Police, the fire service, and state emergency management agencies to reduce response time and improve rescue operations during the festive period. Joint patrols, surveillance, and public sensitisation efforts are also being intensified.

The agency urged members of the public to exercise caution during the celebrations, particularly motorists, who were advised to avoid speeding, drunk driving, and reckless behaviour on the roads. Travellers were also encouraged to check the roadworthiness of their vehicles before embarking on long journeys.

In addition, NEMA called on event organisers, religious centres, and market operators to adhere strictly to safety guidelines, especially in areas prone to overcrowding and fire hazards. The agency warned that negligence during festivities often leads to avoidable loss of lives and property.

NEMA further assured Nigerians that emergency contact lines remain active and encouraged citizens to promptly report any incident requiring urgent attention. The agency emphasised that early reporting can significantly reduce casualties and damage.

With the festive season approaching, NEMA said its priority remains the protection of lives and property, stressing that preparedness and public cooperation are key to ensuring a safe and peaceful celebration across the country.
