The Imo State Police Command has arrested members of the state’s Joint Task Force after a video showing them harassing motorists during a roadside operation went viral, drawing widespread condemnation from the public.
The footage, which circulated widely on social media, captured the operatives engaging motorists in an aggressive manner, with allegations of intimidation and extortion. The incident quickly sparked outrage, prompting calls for the authorities to take firm action against the officers involved.
In response, the police command confirmed that the personnel seen in the video had been identified and taken into custody. The command described the arrest as part of its commitment to professionalism and accountability, stressing that any form of misconduct by security operatives would not be tolerated.
Police officials stated that investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. They added that the officers would face appropriate disciplinary measures and possible prosecution if found guilty, in line with existing laws and internal regulations.
The development has once again highlighted long-standing concerns over the conduct of security operatives at checkpoints and during routine patrols. Many Nigerians have repeatedly complained about harassment and illegal demands by some officers, especially during stop-and-search operations, which often undermine public confidence in law enforcement.
The Imo State Police Command reiterated its call for citizens to report incidents of abuse or misconduct, assuring the public that complaints would be treated seriously. Authorities also urged security personnel to carry out their duties with professionalism and respect for human rights.
As public attention remains focused on the case, rights advocates and residents are watching closely to see how the matter is handled, with expectations that the outcome will reinforce the message that no officer is above the law.
