President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new Nigerian Army depot in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, as part of the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen national security and expand the country’s military training capacity.
The new facility is expected to serve as a major training centre for fresh recruits, helping the army address manpower shortages while improving operational readiness across the country. With growing security challenges ranging from insurgency to banditry and kidnapping, the government sees the expansion of training infrastructure as a critical step toward restoring stability.
Military authorities have confirmed that the Abakaliki depot will become one of the country’s key army training institutions, complementing existing depots in other parts of Nigeria. The decision is aimed at decentralising recruitment and training, while also bringing military presence closer to the Southeast, a move believed to have both strategic and confidence-building benefits for the region.
According to senior army officials, the new depot will be equipped to handle large intakes of recruits, with plans already in place for thousands of trainees to begin their basic military instruction there. The training programme is designed to go beyond traditional drills, incorporating modern combat techniques and improved facilities to better prepare soldiers for real-world operations.
The army leadership has also highlighted plans to introduce advanced training infrastructure at the depot, including modern firing ranges and tactical training units. These additions are intended to improve marksmanship, discipline and battlefield decision-making before soldiers are deployed to active duty locations.
Security experts say the new depot could play a vital role in closing long-standing gaps in troop strength, ensuring a steady flow of well-trained personnel to areas facing persistent security threats. They also note that spreading training facilities across different regions can enhance rapid response capabilities and improve coordination nationwide.
The approval aligns with the Tinubu administration’s broader security agenda, which includes reforms in military and paramilitary training, increased recruitment, and better resourcing of security agencies.
