The trial of former Anambra Governor Willie Obiano has been put on hold indefinitely by the Federal High Court in Abuja amid procedural requests from the prosecuting body. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) filed a motion seeking a sine die adjournment, citing logistical challenges with witnesses and pending judicial matters.
During the hearing, the prosecuting lawyer explained that nine witnesses had already testified under a previous judge, and the case could not proceed until the original judge resumes duties. The counsel highlighted that the EFCC requires continuity for the testimonies to be completed and requested that the court allow the indefinite suspension.
Obiano’s legal team confirmed that they understood the difficulties cited by the prosecution and did not oppose the request for the adjournment.Justice Mohammed Umar formally granted the indefinite postponement, ensuring that the matter will resume only when conditions permit.
The EFCC had accused Obiano of diverting over ₦4 billion from the state’s security vote, channeling funds into private accounts and converting part of it into foreign currency.Previously, the court had affirmed its authority over the case, rejecting attempts to dismiss the charges and recognizing a prima facie case against the former governor.
Among the witnesses who have appeared is a Bureau de Change operator who testified to receiving over ₦400 million from the security vote over several months.Delays in the trial have also been linked to the suspension of the original judge, causing interruptions in the court proceedings.
