Fake RBI Officials Steal $800,000 in Daylight Heist in Bengaluru

Police in Bengaluru, Karnataka, are searching for six armed men who impersonated officials from India’s central bank to steal 70 million rupees ($800,000) from a cash-transport vehicle. The heist unfolded in broad daylight on a busy city road while the van was moving money between bank branches.

The robbers, traveling in an SUV with a fake license plate and a ‘Government of India’ sticker, told the van’s staff to leave their weapons and get into the SUV, while the driver continued with the cash. After following the van for several kilometers, the gang forced the driver out, took control of the cash at gunpoint, and fled. Authorities are investigating whether multiple vehicles were involved and if any company employees were complicit.

The Karnataka Chief Minister confirmed the SUV used in the heist has been recovered, while the Home Minister said it remains unclear which vehicle the suspects used to escape. Officials are confident the police will solve the case, citing past successes in high-profile robberies, such as the May theft of 59kg of gold from a Vijayapura bank, where 39kg and some cash were recovered, and 15 people were arrested.
