Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has openly criticized President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress, accusing them of placing political interests above the welfare of Nigerians.
In a statement shared on his verified X account, Obi argued that the APC is more invested in creating discord within opposition parties than in protecting citizens and their property.
Titled “Now Disgraced Nation,” Obi referenced former U.S. President Donald Trump’s remark that Nigeria is “now disgraced,” questioning whether this judgment could be disputed given the recent wave of insecurity in the country.
He noted, “A few weeks ago, when President Trump described our country as ‘now disgraced,’ many reacted angrily. Yet, can we truly refute it when within a single week, 25 people were abducted and one of our generals, along with other officers, was killed? Today, we face another disturbing terror attack in Kwara State.”
Obi also criticized the distraction caused by internal party conflicts during critical national moments. He highlighted unrest in the PDP, Labour Party, SDP, and other political groups, suggesting these crises were manipulated by the government instead of fostering unity.
Recalling a precedent under former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Obi emphasized that democratic governments should support stability across all political parties. He warned that the current administration seems intent on weakening opposition forces rather than strengthening democratic processes.
“In democratic nations, opposition is respected, elections reflect the people’s will, and governance entails bringing everyone together for peace and progress. A New Nigeria is Possible,” Obi concluded.
