Vietnamese Beauty Queen Sentenced Over Misleading Fibre Gummies

A Vietnamese court has handed a two-year prison term to former beauty queen Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien for misrepresenting the fibre content of gummies she promoted on social media. The ruling confirms that Tien knowingly exaggerated the product’s health benefits, according to state media reports.

The court found that the Kera Supergreens Gummies contained only 0.935 percent fibre, despite marketing claims suggesting a full serving of vegetables per gummy. Tien collaborated with fellow influencers Pham Quang Linh and Hang Du Muc, both of whom also received two-year sentences.

Judges emphasized that the trio acted deliberately to deceive consumers and profited significantly from the sales, with over 129,000 packs sold to more than 56,000 customers, generating a combined profit of $473,000. Tien held a 30 percent stake in the joint venture that produced the gummies.

Investigations revealed that the candies contained over 30 percent sorbitol, a sweetener with laxative properties, along with undisclosed additives. The court described the offense as intentional, warranting strict punishment.

Tien, who gained national recognition after winning the Bangkok-hosted Miss Grand International competition in 2021, had leveraged her fame to secure promotional deals. The case underscores growing scrutiny over influencer marketing and consumer safety in Vietnam.
