You Can’t Back Palestine and Silence Biafra, Igbo Union Tells Tinubu

The Igbo National Union–Worldwide (INU-W) is calling out what it sees as a serious contradiction in Nigeria’s foreign and domestic policies.

Following President Bola Tinubu’s recent endorsement—through Vice President Kashim Shettima—of Palestinian statehood at the United Nations General Assembly, the group accused the Nigerian government of hypocrisy for backing freedom abroad while suppressing self-determination efforts at home.

In a statement signed by the group’s Administrative Secretary, Mazi Austin-Mary Ndukwu, INU-W questioned how Nigeria could speak up for the Palestinian cause while continuing to detain Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and allegedly holding several pro-Biafra supporters in custody across the country.

“Nigeria’s support for Palestine, while stifling Biafra’s voice, is the height of hypocrisy,” the group said. “If freedom for indigenous peoples truly matters, it should begin at home.”

INU-W raised doubts about the motivation behind Nigeria’s position at the UN, asking whether it was a sincere commitment to global justice or merely a political gesture rooted in religious solidarity.

They stressed that Nigeria had no moral authority to advocate for any group’s freedom internationally while “prisoners of conscience” remain behind bars within its borders.

The group didn’t stop there. It also questioned Nigeria’s bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, pointing to the country’s internal struggles with insecurity, corruption, and governance.

“Charity begins at home,” the union stated. “You can’t seek global leadership while your own house is in disarray.”

For the INU-W, the message is clear: Nigeria must address its own unresolved issues—particularly the calls for Biafra’s self-determination—before positioning itself as a champion for freedom on the international stage.
