Tension is building across Nigerian polytechnics as the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics has issued a strong warning to the Federal Government, threatening to down tools if their demands are not met. The union expressed frustration over what it described as years of neglect, poor funding, and the government’s failure to implement agreements that directly affect the welfare of staff members.
In a statement released after their meeting, SSANIP emphasized that the patience of polytechnic workers is wearing thin. They pointed out that despite several promises made by the government, conditions within the institutions have not improved. According to the union, issues of salary arrears, inadequate infrastructure, and lack of proper funding for polytechnics continue to plague the sector, leaving both staff and students at a disadvantage.
Union leaders stressed that polytechnics play a vital role in national development, particularly in producing skilled manpower, yet they have been treated with little regard compared to universities. They warned that unless urgent steps are taken, polytechnic workers will have no choice but to withdraw their services, a move that could once again disrupt academic activities across the country.
Stakeholders have now called on the government to act quickly, noting that another strike in the education sector would further deepen the crisis in Nigeria’s learning system. Students and parents alike are anxious, fearing that this looming action could extend the already long academic disruptions experienced in recent years.
The Federal Government is yet to give a firm response to the demands, but pressure is mounting as the deadline set by the union draws closer. The coming days will determine whether Nigerian polytechnics face yet another shutdown.
