Chaos and panic swept through Ekwulobia and Oko communities in Aguata LGA, Anambra State, on Wednesday morning, as heavily armed gunmen launched a brutal attack that left multiple people dead and several vehicles burned.
The attack began at about 8 a.m., with eyewitnesses reporting that the gunmen took strategic positions on the newly constructed bridge linking both towns. They reportedly opened fire on a joint patrol team of police, soldiers, and local vigilantes, triggering fear and confusion as residents fled for safety.
“It was terrible. People ran in all directions. The gunshots didn’t stop for several minutes,” an eyewitness said anonymously.
Eyewitnesses claimed at least four fatalities, including two individuals reportedly shot inside a tricycle. Viral videos circulating online show residents scampering as gunshots echoed across the area.
The Anambra State Police Command, however, confirmed two deaths. According to spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the joint security forces responded swiftly and engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle.
During the operation, officers neutralized one assailant and recovered the An AK-47 rifle, One automatic pump action gun and Four vehicles, including a Toyota Camry, Lexus 330, GLK, and Toyota Highlander
A Toyota Sienna, believed to belong to the Anambra State Vigilante Group, was also set ablaze during the confrontation.
The gunmen also attempted to attack the Oko Divisional Police Headquarters, but were repelled by officers on duty.
In response to the attack, Anambra CP Ikioye Orutugu ordered increased security deployments in the affected areas and urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security personnel.
“We have everything under control. Residents should go about their lawful activities as we continue to track and dislodge these criminals,” said SP Ikenga.
