Tinubu Disappointed by Opposition Crisis – Akpabio Speaks Out

Senate President Akpabio reveals President Tinubu's concern over the ongoing chaos in opposition parties, urging them to get back on track for the sake of Nigeria's democracy.

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is concerned about the disunity plaguing Nigeria’s opposition parties. Speaking during the inauguration of the Arterial Road N20 Interchange Bridges, Akpabio called on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party to reorganize and strengthen their platforms.

He noted recent internal struggles, including the dispute over the PDP National Secretary position and the defection of Senator Neda Imasuen—Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics—from the Labour Party to the All Progressives Congress (APC). According to Akpabio, these developments deeply concern the President, who desires a strong and vibrant opposition.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a true democrat and is saddened by the state of the opposition in Nigeria,” Akpabio said. “He wants to see a functional opposition. However you got into this confusion, get out of it quickly.”

He further disclosed a recent letter from the Labour Party showing internal cracks within the party, mocking their ability to lead the country while struggling to manage internal affairs.

“Strong Labour Party members are planning to run the country, but can’t even hold their party together,” he added.

Akpabio welcomed Senator Imasuen’s defection to the APC with open arms, expressing satisfaction over the growing strength of the ruling party.

“I’m not tired of receiving new members. Our doors are wide open,” he said.

Meanwhile, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike criticized the PDP’s handling of a Supreme Court ruling that affirmed Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary. Wike rebuked the PDP leadership, particularly Acting Chairman Umar Damagum, for turning to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for direction instead of implementing the court’s decision.

“The Secretary was elected and has always been working. He doesn’t need anyone’s permission to resume work,” Wike stressed. “It’s shameful to seek INEC’s directive on a Supreme Court verdict. That’s ignorance, and ignorance of the law is no excuse.”

Wike also accused Damagum of letting ego and money dictate his leadership, warning that such decisions would only lead to self-sabotage.

“If you don’t know what to do, ask. Don’t let pride mislead you. Money doesn’t solve every issue. Learn how to lead,” Wike advised.
