Hope for Favour: Disfigured 13-Year-Old Girl in Imo to Undergo Eye Surgery After Abuse

After suffering abuse that disfigured her right eye, 13-year-old Favour Nuhu is set for surgery in Imo State, with full medical support from the government

Thirteen-year-old Favour Nuhu, the young girl whose right eye was severely disfigured by her guardian in Imo State, will undergo corrective eye surgery next week. This follows medical investigations that confirmed a cataract and dangerously high eye pressure resulting from the assault.

The rescue and medical care are being championed by the Stand For Humanity Foundation, led by Chidiebube Okeoma. The foundation disclosed that a team of optometrists at Camela Eye Clinic in Owerri examined the child and concluded that surgery is the only solution to help restore her vision.

“The pressure in her right eye has reached 31 percent, when the normal range shouldn’t exceed 25. A large cataract has also formed,” the statement revealed.

The foundation expressed gratitude to the Imo State Government, particularly the Executive Secretary of the State Health Insurance Agency, for taking full responsibility for the surgery cost. Favour has also been enrolled in the state’s health scheme for continued care.

Legal action is also in motion. The foundation has notified its legal department as the state police complete their investigation into the abusive guardian, Mrs. Joyce Onyinye Obioma, who was reported by concerned neighbors in Ohii, Owerri.

The foundation’s spokesperson reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on child abuse and urged guardians to return children to their parents if they cannot care for them humanely.

Favour was initially taken to the State University Medical Centre, Owerri, where she began her recovery journey.
