A fatal accident in the Iyana Ejigbo area of Lagos has left one pedestrian dead and two others critically injured, following a collision with a commercial bus. The driver and conductor of the bus fled the scene immediately after the incident.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the tragic incident in a statement released on Saturday, revealing that the accident involved a commercial LT bus with the registration number AAA 927 YJ.
According to LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the vehicle was reportedly speeding when it experienced a catastrophic brake failure, causing the driver to lose control. The bus swerved off the road and collided forcefully with pedestrians standing nearby.
“In a disturbing turn of events, both the driver and the conductor fled the scene, abandoning the victims and the vehicle,” Bakare-Oki stated.
LASTMA operatives were quick to respond, rescuing the deceased from beneath the bus and providing immediate assistance to the two injured victims. The injured were promptly taken to the General Hospital in Isolo for urgent medical care.
Officers from the Ejigbo Police Division also assisted with security during the rescue operation, ensuring the area remained secure.
The vehicle has been impounded and transferred to the police for further investigation, with Bakare-Oki expressing his condolences to the family of the deceased and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
He urged motorists to adhere to speed limits and prioritize regular vehicle maintenance, especially concerning braking systems, to prevent further accidents.
LASTMA continues to emphasize its commitment to ensuring road safety, and encourages the public to report any traffic violations or accidents through their dedicated toll-free hotline at 080000527862 (0800-00-LASTMA).
