Suspected Thief Dies While Attempting To Steal Agemo Statue in Ijebu Ode

A man identified as Jeremiah Kosesochi Nwoke has reportedly died in a bizarre incident while allegedly trying to steal the revered Agemo statue located at the Itoro Roundabout in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

The incident, which occurred under the cover of night, has left residents in disbelief. The Agemo statue, a significant cultural symbol in Ijebuland, is situated near the roundabout that leads to the ultramodern palace of the Awujale of Ijebuland.
According to eyewitness reports and local sources, the suspect made multiple attempts to uproot the statue, which is known to be heavily fortified and deeply installed. After several failed efforts, he allegedly succeeded in dislodging it but died shortly afterward while attempting to flee with the sculpture.
The unusual occurrence has stirred discussions in the community, with some attributing the suspect’s death to spiritual consequences tied to the cultural importance of the statue.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement regarding the incident, but investigations are reportedly underway. Meanwhile, the statue has since been recovered and returned to its original position.
