The House of Representatives has approved President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, following the ongoing political crisis in the region.
On Tuesday, President Tinubu announced the emergency rule, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months. A sole administrator was appointed to oversee the state during this period.
However, according to the Nigerian Constitution, the emergency rule requires the approval of two-thirds of the National Assembly to take effect.
During Thursday’s plenary session, Speaker Abbas Tajuddeen subjected the motion to a voice vote, where the majority voted in favor. He later confirmed that 243 lawmakers were in attendance.
Earlier, Rep. Ali Isa JC moved a motion to review and possibly reduce the six-month duration, which was seconded by Rep. Miriam Onuoha.
