The southwest legislators have pushed for the harmonization of standing orders across the Houses of Assembly in the region to enable seamless governance and legislative efficiency.
The legislators, under the auspices of the Southwest Legislative Reform Implementation Committee (SLRIC), also asked for the strengthening of security in the geo-political zone.
The lawmakers called on the six governors of the southwest region to reinforce and strengthen the South Western Security Network Agency codename Amotekun Corps, enhance security cooperation, and recommendations for legislative measures.
The lawmakers also emphasized the importance of not viewing regional security efforts as political tools but as complementary forces working in tandem with the Nigerian Armed Forces, Police, and Civil Defence Corps to secure the region
The Chairman of Southwest Majority Leaders Forum, Hon Oluwole Emmanuel Ogunmolasuyi, in a statement after the meeting held in Osogbo, Osun State, said the critical reform of the legislators aimed to streamline legislative procedures and ensure that all Houses of Assembly in the Southwest are aligned, fostering seamless governance and legislative efficiency.
Ogunmolasuyi, the Majority Leader of the Ondo State House of Assembly the SLRIC meeting focused on several key areas, notably the harmonization of standing orders across the Southwest region.
Ogunmolasuyi emphasized the urgent need to strengthen the security architecture across the Southwest to reduce violent crimes in the southwest geo-political zone
According to him, “Our discussions have led to formulating strategies to bolster our region’s security. Our collective responsibility is to ensure that these plans are swiftly and effectively implemented.”
The lawmaker representing Owo Constituency 1 called on the Southwest Governors and Speakers to look beyond political affiliations and work together for the region’s greater good.
Pointedly, he said “We must transcend party lines and focus on building a safer and more prosperous Southwest. Our people deserve nothing less.”
Ogunmolasuyi highlighted the need to foster more business and economic opportunities across the Southwest and encouraged state governments to create policies and partnerships that attract investments and drive economic growth.
His words “The future of the Southwest is not just in security and governance, but in unlocking the vast economic potential of our region. Let us work towards creating an environment where businesses can thrive, providing jobs and prosperity for our people.”
Ogunmolasuyi said with the conclusion of the second quarterly meeting, the SLRIC remained committed to driving reforms and strengthening regional cooperation for the benefit of all Southwest states.
He appreciated the contributions of former Majority Leaders who now serve as members of the Board of Trustees (BOT) of SLRIC. He added the former lawmakers have laid a solid foundation for them to build upon, and their guidance and wisdom remain invaluable to the growth of this committee and the region as a whole.
