LP Crisis: Abure supporters hold protest in Abuja

Supporters of Julius Abure, the factional National Chairman of the Labour Party, staged a protest in Gudu, Abuja, on Monday, expressing their discontent with what they perceive as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) meddling in the party’s affairs.

Carrying placards with various messages, the protesters commenced their march from the new Abuja chapter secretariat.

This demonstration is a continuation of the ongoing conflict between the Nigerian Labour Congress and the Labour Party. Previously, the NLC accused Abure of unilaterally administering the affairs of the LP, prompting a vote of no confidence in his leadership and a call for his resignation.

The rift between the two entities has garnered public attention, sparking debates about the NLC’s authority to intervene in LP matters and the underlying reasons and consequences of their discord.

The power struggle between the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee of the Labour Party and the Joe Ajaero-led Nigeria Labour Congress poses a significant threat to the Labour Party’s future, according to an investigation by Vanguard.

The primary source of contention appears to be the battle for control over the party structure. Major stakeholders within the party have accused Abure of treating the party as his personal fiefdom, an allegation Abure vehemently denies.
