By-election: INEC takes delivery of sensitive materials from CBN in Lagos

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos State, on Thursday, received sensitive materials for the upcoming Surulere Federal Constituency I by-election scheduled for Saturday. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) facilitated the delivery of these materials.

Prof. Ayobami Salami, INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Lagos State, assured reporters that the commission is thoroughly prepared for the upcoming election.

Salami said: “We have taken delivery of the sensitive materials today. We are in the last phase of the process of the by-election.

“We have taken the ballot papers and the results sheet for Saturday’s by-election. It is clear to everyone that we are ready for the election.”

He mentioned that the commission had extended invitations to representatives of political parties and security agencies to observe the process, emphasizing the commitment to transparency.

He assured stakeholders that the sensitive materials are securely stored and intact, showcasing the commission’s dedication to transparency.

Salami emphasized INEC’s readiness to conduct a free, fair, and credible election on Saturday, urging the cooperation and support of all stakeholders. He also disclosed that the distribution of materials from the state headquarters to the six wards and 258 polling units comprising Surulere Federal Constituency I would commence on Friday.

The upcoming Feb. 3 election will witness 12 candidates from various political parties vying for the vacant seat. The vacancy arose due to the resignation of the former occupant, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila, who, after winning, was appointed as Chief of Staff by President Bola Tinubu.
