Reps Committee commences enumeration, valuation of public assets

The House of Representatives Committee on Public Assets has initiated measures to enforce the enumeration, valuation, and maintenance of public assets and the asset register, aligning with the House’s directive.

Rep. Ademorin Kuye, Chairman of the House Committee on Public Assets, shared this development during an interview with journalists in Abuja on Thursday.

Kuye explained that the committee has taken immediate steps to recover assets valued in trillions of naira, encompassing stolen and non-operational public assets both within and outside Nigeria. He emphasized that this action aims to assist the Federal Government in fully implementing the 2024 Budget.

Earlier, the National Assembly’s Green Chamber passed a resolution instructing the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) to conduct a comprehensive enumeration and valuation of all public assets. Additionally, the Nigerian Institute of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV) was tasked with creating a detailed inventory of assets in a register accessible to the public.

The committee’s focus extends to evaluating unchecked sales and misappropriation of government assets. Kuye highlighted that the Committee on Public Assets is rooted in three core principles that define its mission.

These, according to him, include “Strong oversight of public asset management and disposal in all the MDAs, guardianship of national assets, and governance of forfeited assets.”
