Aiyedun Quarters in Akure South Local Government Area of Ondo State faced a tragic ordeal on Wednesday, leading to the loss of a nine-day-old baby and her 30-year-old mother, plunging the community into deep sorrow.
The distressing incident unfolded when an overhead water tank collapsed onto a one-bedroom detached bungalow near a primary health center within the quarters.
Reports from locals indicated that Bose Sanusi, the mother of the deceased baby, had christened her daughter the day before the unfortunate incident.
Fortunately, the grandmother of the deceased infant and her elder brother narrowly escaped harm as they were in the kitchen, which remained unaffected by the collapse.
Rescue efforts retrieved the lifeless bodies of the mother and child from the rubble, now resting at the state specialist hospital’s mortuary.
Confirming the tragedy, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, stated that the collapse led to the untimely demise of the mother and her infant daughter. An investigation has been initiated to ascertain the cause behind the water tank’s collapse.
