On Monday, numerous schools in Brussels and the Brabant region remained closed due to a bomb alert. The Wallonie-Bruxelles Enseignement administration body confirmed that 27 schools were closed in accordance with the precautionary principle. Police were inspecting the schools and more information was expected later in the day.
Just two days prior, the Israeli government announced that it would summon the Belgian and Spanish ambassadors in response to criticism from Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo over Israel’s bombardment of Gaza, which has led to the suffering of Palestinian civilians.
Sánchez called for recognition of a Palestinian state by the European Union and stated that Spain may recognize Palestine on its own. During a joint press conference on Friday, Sánchez said that it was time for the international community and the EU to recognize a Palestinian state.
He added that it would be better if the EU did it together, but Spain would take its own decisions if necessary.
