NAFDAC seizes expired, revalidated pharmaceuticals worth N15m in Jos

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) confiscated revalidated pharmaceuticals valued at N15 million from a pharmacy in Jos due to their expiration.

Additionally, the agency seized unregistered alcoholic beverages exceeding N30 million in value from shops within Jos and the nearby Bukuru metropolis.

Mr. Shaba Mohammed, Director of NAFDAC’s North Central Zone, disclosed on Thursday in Jos that the agency had received reports concerning the sale of expired drugs by the pharmacy. He stated that the establishment had been altering expiry date markings on pharmaceuticals to extend their shelf lives.

During NAFDAC’s inspection, Mohammed detailed the discovery of a room at the pharmacy filled with drugs stripped of their expiry dates, awaiting the application of new markings.

“During the raid, we discovered that the pharmacy had a room where expired dates were cleaned off and the drugs revalidated.

“These pharmaceuticals consist of both oral and injectable,’’ he said.

NAFDAC has sealed the pharmacy and has arrested the pharmacist who failed to produce his current license to practice as a pharmacist and the current operational license of the pharmacy itself.

Mohammed cautioned the public against buying pharmaceuticals from unregistered pharmacies.

He added that complaints about drugs should be made speedily to the nearest NAFDAC office.

He also cautioned consumers of drinks and packaged foods to always look out for NAFDAC registration numbers on such products.

Mohammed assured that raids on pharmacies and shops in Plateau would continue until the state is rid of unwholesome products.
