Mother held over ‘murder’ of day-old baby

The Gombe State Police Command has officially confirmed the apprehension of the mother of a one-day-old baby who tragically threw her child from a height to its death. This distressing incident occurred at the female hostel of Gombe State University, GSU Gombe.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Mahid Mua’zu, the command received a formal complaint from GSU security at approximately 1 p.m. yesterday regarding this incident.

“We received a complaint today (Sunday) via the Chief Security Officer, CSO of the GSU who reported around 1:30pm that the incident happened at the university jurisdiction. We have taken over investigation presently and we are going to communicate after gathering our facts in due course,” he said.

According to ASP Mahid Mua’zu, the one-day-old baby was declared deceased upon arrival at the scene. The mother of the newborn, identified as Rahab, a fourth-year student in Public Administration, is currently undergoing medical treatment at the Federal Teaching Hospital (FTH) in Gombe.

The discovery of the lifeless body of the day-old baby near hall four of the female hostel on Saturday morning caused widespread panic within the university. The baby was found with an umbilical cord still attached and an injury on his right leg.

While the university authorities have not issued an official statement on the incident, sources indicate that the murder of the newborn is viewed as a serious criminal act that cannot be overlooked.
