Gunmen carried out a deadly attack in the Mile 6 area of Jalingo, Taraba State, yesterday morning. During the attack, they killed a woman and abducted a police officer along with members of his family. The police officer was attached to the Rivers State Command.
The assailants also shot the police officer and another woman in the house, with the woman later succumbing to her injuries at the Federal Medical Centre.
According to SP Usman Abdullahi, the spokesperson for the Taraba Police Command, the kidnappers entered the premises by scaling the fence. The kidnapped victims included the police officer’s wife and daughter. The Taraba Police Command is actively involved in addressing the situation and is working towards the safe release of the victims.
It was reported by a resident in the neighborhood that the invasion occurred around 2 a.m. and that the attackers numbered over 40.
The resident provided a different perspective on the incident, suggesting that their original target was a clergyman living in the area. However, as the clergyman was not present, the kidnappers went after his family members instead.
Additionally, the resident mentioned that these kidnappers have been a menace to the community for some time, coming from the mountains bordering the area, and expressed frustration over the lack of effective action by authorities to address this ongoing threat.
