In Katsina State, a coalition comprising pro-democracy activists has openly rejected military coups within the African continent. They have also expressed their unwavering commitment to upholding democratic governance.
The coalition’s Chairperson, Comrade Bishir Dauda, conveyed these sentiments during a press briefing held to commemorate a peaceful demonstration denouncing coup d’état occurrences in the Niger Republic. Within this context, the coalition fervently called for the immediate release of the President and his family, while advocating for the restoration of democratic processes within the country.
He said: “We Condemn and denounce unjustifiable coup d’etat in Niger and indeed anywhere else”
”Furthermore, we strongly condemn the arrogance and disrespect to world leaders and respected individuals such as the President of Chad, Mohammed Idris Derby, former Nigerian Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar, and Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, displayed by the coupist”
” We also demand the immediate and unconditional release of President Bazoum and his family.
”We applaud the ECOWAS for its firm stance in support of democracy and the need to restore constitutional order in Niger”
Furthermore, the coalition issued a stern warning to the junta, cautioning against the reckless initiation of conflict for self-serving purposes. The coalition emphasized the imperative of avoiding actions that could potentially plunge the sub-region into unnecessary turmoil.
They also urged the junta to acknowledge and respond positively to the peace overtures extended by ECOWAS and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who currently holds the position of ECOWAS chairman.
