On August 12, 2023, the world observes International Youth Day, and just a month ago, President Bola Tinubu nominated a 36-year-old Nigerian youth as a Minister, marking the youngest appointment in the history of Nigeria’s 4th Republic.
It’s no longer a surprise that President Tinubu’s July nomination of Dr. Betta Edu from Cross River State as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria reflects his commitment to including women and youths in his government. This nomination also underscores his determination to bring highly qualified individuals with exceptional character and integrity on board to advance his ‘Renewed Hope’ Agenda.
Dr. Betta Edu, the youngest of all the nominees, embodies the archetype of the contemporary Nigerian youth. A medical doctor with a Ph.D., she has become a symbol of Nigerian youth’s aspirations, dreams, and ambitions.
On this year’s International Youth Day, the young people of Nigeria should take inspiration from and follow in the footsteps of Dr. Betta Edu. Her rapid ascent over eight years – from being a Special Adviser to the Governor of Cross Rivers State to becoming the Director General of Cross River State Primary Health Care Development Agency, then the Commissioner of Health, followed by the Chairperson of the National Forum of Health Commissioners in Nigeria, and subsequently the youngest National Woman Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), leading to her designation as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria – demonstrates that hard work, focus, humility, and faith in God can contribute significantly to national development.
Similar to Betta, today’s youth should understand their potential and realize that every situation offers opportunities. They should be prepared to overcome challenges and recognize that success demands effort and dedication. Rather than casting blame, they should provide value and practical solutions to the nation’s issues.
Betta Edu’s track record of accomplishments precedes her. She assumed the role of Nigeria’s youngest Special Adviser at one point and later became the youngest Director General of the Cross River Primary Healthcare Development Agency, where she excelled remarkably. During the national crisis of COVID-19, she led the Cross River State COVID-19 Taskforce, showcasing her capabilities effectively.
When her capabilities were required beyond her state, Dr. Betta emerged as the youngest National Woman Leader of the ruling APC. Today, she stands as the youngest Minister-designate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a position that is fitting given her proven ability to deliver. Additionally, she is the first female Minister to hail from Cross River State, opening doors for increased female participation in politics in her home state.
Betta’s achievements encourage younger generations to recognize their potential and the possibilities they can reach through dedication and determination. Despite her modest beginnings, she has exemplified that hard work and resolve can elevate one to her level of success.
Her consistent commitment and achievements have established her as a remarkable figure, not only within Cross River but also throughout the nation. Her story emphasizes that anyone can achieve greatness if they remain focused and industrious. Her motto of “I wish to be known for the value I bring to the table, beauty is vain” underscores her determination to excel beyond appearances.
President Tinubu’s choice in selecting her as a Minister was well-founded. She stands as a beacon of excellence, celebrated both locally and nationally, exemplifying the caliber of leadership needed to guide the country toward progress. Dr. Betta Edu’s appointment stands as a precise match of skills and position, renewing hope for the Nigerian youth.
