FCT, neighbouring states to experience heavy rainfall — Says FEMA

The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is closely monitoring the weather conditions in anticipation of heavy to moderate rainfall on Sunday.

Dr. Abbas Idriss, the Director-General of the Agency, announced the agency’s preparedness in a statement released by Ms. Nkechi Isah, the Head of Public Affairs, in Abuja on Friday.

According to the weather forecast by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMET), the FCT and neighboring states are expected to experience heavy to moderate rainfall on Sunday.

Additionally, NiMET predicted similar weather patterns, including moderate to heavy rains, in parts of Katsina, Kano, Bauchi, Plateau, and Taraba states.

Due to the anticipated heavy downpour, NiMET also warned of potential flash floods, riverine flooding, strong winds, soil erosion, and thunder with lightning.

Dr. Idriss emphasized the need for preparedness and prompt emergency response. The agency has put its search and rescue team on high alert to swiftly respond to any emergencies that may arise.

In response to the forecast, the agency is updating its flood contingency plans to ensure maximum effectiveness in dealing with any adverse impacts.

“The forecast also anticipates displacement of people due to floods, an outbreak of water-borne diseases, and damages to infrastructure,” he said.

Dr. Idriss appealed to residents to take the early warning seriously and exercise caution during the rains.

They are advised to avoid driving or wading through pooled water and to clear any blocked drains. For those living near water channels, relocation is advised to mitigate potential risks.

In case of emergencies, Dr. Idriss encouraged residents to promptly call the 112 emergency toll-free number to facilitate swift response and assistance from FEMA.

“I advise residents to always dial the 112 emergency toll-free number in the event of an emergency, to enable us to respond on time,” he said.

Being vigilant and proactive can help reduce the potential damages caused by the expected heavy rainfall and ensure the safety and well-being of the community.
