Police arrest suspects as protest rocks OAU over mob killing of final year student

Men of the Osun State Police command have arrested some students in connection with the lynching of a final-year student who was accused of stealing a phone.

The university was thrown into chaos on Monday when a 500-level student of the school identified as Okoli Ahinze was killed by a mob after he was alleged to have stolen a phone.

Although the Public Relations Officer of the Student Union, Ogunperi Taofeek Olalekan, confirmed that some persons had been arrested in connection to the death of Ahinze, students were seen protesting his killing by shutting down the SUG building on Wednesday.

He said, “Yes there was a protest this morning, but the protesters have been dispatched.

“Also, the issue is now under investigation and some persons have been arrested in connection to the death of the students.”

“Police are investigating at the moment, the school security department and leadership of the union are also working with them to seriously ensure that all persons involved in the action are arrested and duly punished,” he added.

The spokesperson for the state police command, Yemisi Opalola, confirmed the arrest of two people and that investigation was ongoing.
