Nigerian Gospel Singer Kolawole Okanlawon Dies, Music Community Mourns

The Nigerian gospel music community has been thrown into mourning following the death of popular gospel singer and choir master, Kolawole Okanlawon.

Okanlawon, who served as choir master at the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) Winners Parish in Lagos State, was confirmed dead on Monday, October 5, 2026. The cause of his death has not yet been made public.

His passing was announced by fellow gospel singer Esther Igbekele on her Instagram page. In an emotional tribute, Igbekele described the news as more than a “rude shock,” saying she still finds it difficult to believe she is writing about his demise.

Igbekele revealed that the two had recently spent time together during her last trip to the United Kingdom, which made the loss even harder to process. She described life as “fragile and fleeting” and said Okanlawon would be deeply missed by the Esther Igbekele Music Organisation, adding that “his presence will not be forgotten.”

The Gospel Musicians Association of Nigeria (GOMAN) also confirmed his death, praying for the repose of his soul and asking God to grant his family and loved ones the strength to bear the loss.

Okanlawon was known within gospel circles for his energetic personality and vibrant stage presence. Fans and colleagues flooded social media with condolences, remembering him for his contribution to gospel music ministry.

One fan wrote: “Oh my God, so sad. This man has so much energy when dancing. I love his vibes so much.”
