No fewer than 1,400 birds have been killed by flooding in Enwan community, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State, following hours of heavy rainfall on Monday.
The flooding also destroyed a palm oil mill, submerged residential buildings and disrupted academic activities, as pupils were unable to go to school.
The owner of the poultry farm, Monday John, said the disaster had destroyed his means of livelihood, appealing to the government to intervene and prevent a recurrence.
“That is my house. I have a poultry. The flood water took over everywhere. The flood killed 1,400 of my birds. The rain began at 6am. I woke up to see water everywhere. The government should talk to the water board people. They should tell them when to release water,” he said.
Also affected by the flood, Chief John Omaze, said the water invaded his residence and destroyed his palm oil mill.
“Flood destroyed my palm oil mill. Our children could not go to school and many people did not go to farm,” he said.
Edo State is among Nigeria’s flood-prone states, particularly in communities along the banks of the River Niger.
