Plateau State’s Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Prince Miaphen, has urged the state’s youth to distance themselves from violence, drug abuse, and other social vices as the 2027 general elections approach.
He stated this during a one-day Campus Peace and Security Summit held in Jos, organized by the National Association of Nigerian Students in collaboration with the Plateau State Peace Building Agency.
The summit served as a pivotal platform aimed at educating and sensitizing young people about the perils of violence and the critical importance of fostering a culture of peace and security leading up to and following the upcoming elections.
Miaphen emphasized that the youth are crucial stakeholders in the democratic process, and their choices will significantly influence the state’s future.
“Violence and drug abuse not only harm individuals but also undermine the very fabric of our society. As we approach the elections, it is imperative that our youth embrace peace and reject any form of violence that could disrupt our communal harmony,” Miaphen stated passionately.
Highlighting the commitment of the current administration under Governor Caleb Mutfwang, Miaphen noted that a youth-friendly environment has been cultivated through strategic appointments and initiatives designed to enhance the welfare and governance participation of young individuals.
He reiterated that empowering the youth is a priority, as they represent the future of Plateau State.
” As young people, we must be agents of change, not only in our communities but in our entire state. The choices we make today will shape the future we inherit tomorrow”.
Stakeholders at the summit echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the need for a collective stand against societal ills.
They asserted that such platforms not only provide an avenue for dialogue but also inspire youths to take a stand against violence and substance abuse.
The event culminated in a series of discussions and interactive sessions aimed at empowering attendees with the knowledge and tools necessary to advocate for peace and security.
Participants were encouraged to become ambassadors of change within their respective campuses and communities, promoting a message of unity and resilience.
