Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has challenged political leaders and residents of Ikorodu Division to deliver 250,000 votes for President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
Sanwo-Olu made the call on Thursday at the Palace of the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabiru Shotobi, during a meeting between the APC governorship candidate, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and traditional rulers across the Ikorodu Division.
The meeting also witnessed a declaration of support by traditional rulers and political leaders in the division for President Tinubu, Hamzat and other APC candidates ahead of the 2027 elections.
The governor, who attended the meeting alongside Hamzat, APC deputy governorship candidate, Princess Damilola Sonayon-James, Lagos APC Chairman, Pastor Cornelious Ojelabi, members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), political leaders and public office holders, urged the people of Ikorodu to mobilise massively for the ruling party.
Sanwo-Olu said Tinubu deserved re-election based on what he described as the President’s performance and contributions to the development of Lagos State and Nigeria.
“Development has transformed Lagos. We can see what the President has done in Lagos State and elsewhere in Nigeria. He deserves to be re-elected because of his performance. So, let us campaign and work towards President Tinubu’s re-election in 2027,” he said.
The governor specifically challenged Ikorodu stakeholders to fulfil their promise of delivering 250,000 votes for Tinubu in the presidential election.
“I want to urge the people of Ikorodu to deliver 250,000 votes as promised for President Tinubu in the 2027 election.
Mobilise votes for President Tinubu and all APC candidates. I will work for the victory of Dr. Obafemi Hamzat as my successor. Let us get him elected as the next governor of Lagos State,” Sanwo-Olu said.
Earlier, the Paramount Ruler of Ikorodu Division and Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Shotobi, expressed confidence that residents of the division would support Tinubu, Hamzat and other APC candidates.
The monarch, who received the delegation alongside other traditional rulers, said the traditional institution would unite in support of the APC candidates, stressing that the monarchs remained committed supporters of the party.
Oba Shotobi said Ikorodu residents trusted the leadership capabilities of Tinubu and Hamzat and would demonstrate their support through their votes.
Also speaking, the Ranodu of Imota, Oba Ajibade Bakare-Agoro, praised Hamzat’s relationship with Sanwo-Olu, describing it as a factor that contributed to his emergence as the APC governorship candidate.
He said: “Hamzat is the only deputy who didn’t disturb his governor. He has a good relationship with Governor Sanwo-Olu, and that relationship earned him the APC candidacy. He is enjoying the reward of his father. Ikorodu will support him because Ikorodu is always in the progressive camp.”
Hamzat, in his remarks, urged residents of Ikorodu to participate actively in the 2027 electoral process and vote for Tinubu, himself and other APC candidates.
He described the election as critical to sustaining the current reforms and development agenda, while praising Tinubu’s courage, experience and commitment to national development.
“Lagos is developing, and the 2027 general election is important. We must come out and support President Tinubu with our votes. I believe achieving 250,000 votes for APC in Ikorodu is possible. We should vote in large numbers. We must support our President,” Hamzat said.
He warned against what he described as the danger of experimenting with Lagos’ leadership, stressing the strategic importance of the state to Nigeria’s economy and development.
“We cannot afford to experiment with Lagos because it is very important to Nigeria. Let us support the ruling party so that Lagos can keep progressing. Ikorodu is included in our development plans. Ikorodu is important to us,” he said.
The APC governorship candidate also assured traditional rulers and political leaders that concerns raised during the meeting would receive the attention they deserved, while reaffirming his commitment to the development of Ikorodu Division.
Senator Tokunbo Abiru, representing Lagos East Senatorial District, said Hamzat’s competence and leadership qualities were unquestionable.
Similarly, Hon. Babajimi Benson, representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency, assured Tinubu and Hamzat of 250,000 votes from the division, saying more than 1,000 Community Development Associations (CDAs) in Ikorodu would support the APC and its candidates.
Other traditional rulers and political leaders at the meeting expressed confidence that Hamzat’s emergence as Sanwo-Olu’s successor would ensure continuity in development, stability and progress across Ikorodu Division and Lagos State.
