The Governing Council of the University of Ibadan has appointed Professor Peter Olamakinde Olapegba, as the best candidate for the position of 14th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan following a very thorough, transparent and highly competitive exercise.
The cheering news was made known to New Telegraph on Wednesday after it concluded its meeting and considered the report of the Selection Board. It therefore approved the recommendation of the Board to appoint Professor Olapegba as the next Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan.
According to the Directorate of Communication of the University, “the post of the Vice Chancellor of University of Ibadan would become vacant on 01 November, 2026, and in accordance with the provisions of the extant rules, the Governing Council initiated the process of the appointment. Advertisements were placed in April 2026 in three (3) national newspapers and the official university bulletin, and at the expiration of the advertisement, six (6) applications were received for the position.
“In line with the University Act, the Search Team was subsequently constituted to search for suitable persons who might not apply on their own volition. At the end of the exercise, two additional applications were received and this brought the number of the applicants to eight (8).
“On Tuesday, 21 July, 2026, Council interacted with all eight (8) candidates. Members of Council scored the candidates using approved Council guidelines. At the end of the exercise, five (5) candidates in order of merit were shortlisted for the final interview.
“At the meeting, (2) members of Council, as required by Law, were also appointed to serve on the Selection Board for the appointment of the Vice-Chancellor, while earlier in the week, Senate had elected two (2) members of Senate to serve on the Board.
“Today Wednesday, 22 July 2026, the Joint Council-Senate Selection Board interviewed the five (5) candidates shortlisted and Professor Olapegba emerged as the best candidate for the position of 14th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan”, the release said.
Professor Olapegba is the current Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration of the university.
