Argentina coach, Lionel Scaloni, has described captain Lionel Messi as the greatest footballer of all time after the team’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
Spain won the trophy on Sunday after Ferran Torres scored the only goal of the match in extra time.
The final is expected to be Messi’s last World Cup appearance for Argentina.
Speaking after the match, Scaloni praised the 39-year-old for his remarkable career and lasting impact on football.
“He is 39 years old. It is unbelievable,” Scaloni said.
“It was always clear to me that he would continue playing until he decided to stop, and everyone would support him.
“I hope everyone is proud of him because he is the best football player ever to set foot on a football pitch.”
Messi ended the tournament with eight goals and four assists, although Argentina fell short of defending the World Cup title.
