Senate Urges FG to Intensify Military Operations Against Terrorists, Bandits

The Senate, on Tuesday, called on the Federal Government to sustain and intensify military and intelligence operations against terrorists, kidnappers, bandits and other criminal elements across the country.

The call followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, and co-sponsored by all senators during plenary.

Lawmakers urged the government to strengthen security operations through the provision of modern equipment, advanced surveillance technology, better intelligence, improved logistics and improved welfare for members of the Armed Forces.

The Upper Chamber stressed that these measures must be pursued consistently until Nigerians can live, work, do business and attend school without fear.

The Senate also asked the Federal Government to ensure prompt payment of death benefits, insurance claims, pensions and other entitlements to families of fallen security personnel.

It further called for sustained investment in the welfare, training and operational capacity of the Armed Forces and other security agencies.

Commending President Bola Tinubu, the Senate praised the Armed Forces and other security agencies for the successful rescue of abducted school children and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Moving the motion, Senator Bamidele said the President showed decisive leadership after the abduction and immediately directed the military and intelligence agencies to deploy all lawful resources to secure the victims’ release.

He recalled that after weeks of coordinated, intelligence-driven operations, the security forces rescued the victims. Several suspected terrorists were arrested during the operation while others were neutralised.

The Senate Leader said the rescue restored hope among Nigerians, especially parents and school communities, and demonstrated the growing professionalism of the nation’s security agencies.

Bamidele paid tribute to three security personnel who lost their lives during the mission. They were a Lieutenant and a Private of the Nigerian Army, and a Sergeant of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Senate also commended a Lance Corporal of the Army who was injured in the operation. Lawmakers wished him a speedy recovery and urged authorities to ensure he receives proper medical care and all due entitlements.

A minute of silence was observed in honour of the fallen heroes. The Senate extended condolences to their families, the Armed Forces, the Police and the entire security community.

Contributing, Senator Abdulfatai Buhari and Senator Adamu Aliero commended the Federal Government and the Armed Forces. Senator Adams Oshiomhole cautioned against calls for external probes, saying it would undermine national sovereignty. Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan urged government to provide psychological support and rehabilitation for the rescued victims.

In his remarks, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau commended President Tinubu for his commitment to tackling insecurity. He said the Senate would continue to support efforts aimed at restoring peace across the country.
