Outrage as Man Allegedly Loses Eye After Police Brutality in Ebonyi

What started as a journey home has ended in pain, public outrage and fresh questions over police brutality in Nigeria after a man was allegedly left with a serious eye injury following an encounter with police officers in Ebonyi State.

The victim, identified as Arinze Eze, was reportedly travelling back to his hometown of Ngbo in Ohaukwu Local Government Area when he became involved in an altercation with some police officers in Ishieke, Ebonyi Local Government Area.

The incident has triggered widespread anger on social media, with many Nigerians demanding justice after reports emerged that the officers allegedly brutalised Eze, leaving him with a severe injury to one of his eyes.

Reacting to the incident, the Ebonyi State Police Command confirmed that the officers involved have been identified and arrested.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, the police said the officers have been moved to the Command Headquarters on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Hope Urunwa Okafor.

According to the statement, the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has begun what the command described as a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident.

The police also expressed sympathy to the victim, who is currently receiving treatment at the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki.

“The Ebonyi State Police Command has officially identified and detained the officers involved in the recent altercation with a civilian in Ohaukwu LGA,” the statement read.

It added that the command maintains a zero-tolerance policy against brutality, indiscipline and any misconduct capable of bringing the Nigeria Police Force into disrepute.

“Any officer found culpable will face strict disciplinary action. We remain committed to protecting the fundamental rights of all citizens,” the statement added.

The incident has once again reignited conversations about police accountability, with many Nigerians calling for more than promises of investigation. For many Gen Z Nigerians, the case is another painful reminder that encounters with law enforcement can still end in tragedy, despite repeated assurances of reforms.

As investigations continue, many are waiting to see whether the officers involved will face justice or whether the case will become another forgotten chapter in the country’s long history of alleged police brutality.
