The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that it will build on the template of Ekiti governorship election in the subsequent elections.
INEC Chairman, Prof Joash Amupitan, SAN who spoke on Wednesday when Arewa Youth Forum (AYF) paid him a courtesy visit, said Nigeria is a beacon of democracy in Africa.
“Nigeria has the largest democracy in Africa,” he said, adding, “For it to be well with Africa, Nigeria must get it right. And we are committed and determined to ensure that we face that election head on.”
According to him, the Ekiti State governorship election was a demonstration of improved standards, stating that observers noted the early arrival of INEC officials at polling units, the calm and secure atmosphere, and the seamless deployment of election materials.
He called for support of Nigerians to the commission in delivering elections that would serve as a model for Africa.
The leader of the delegation, Alhaji Gambo Ibrahim Gujungu, commended INEC for the transparent, peaceful and credible elections under Prof. Amupitan’s watch.
Alhaji Gujungu who is Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT) of AYF, said there is marked improvement in the conduct of elections, and pledged the forum’s full support and active collaboration ahead of the 2027 general election.
“We stand before you today to commend the hard work of your leadership and the successes recorded in the recent elections held across the country.
“The improvement in logistics, timely deployment of materials, and adherence to election guidelines despite enormous challenges are commendable,” Alhaji Gujungu stated.
