Lagos Police to Impound Vehicles With Obscure Number Plates

The Lagos State Police Command has announced the commencement of a statewide enforcement operation against vehicles with covered, obscured, defaced, unauthorised, or missing registration number plates, as part of efforts to strengthen security and combat crime across the state.

The exercise, scheduled to begin on Monday, June 15, 2026, follows a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, aimed at improving public safety and preventing criminal elements from concealing their identities while operating within the state.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Sunday, noting that the enforcement drive would be supervised by the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Tijani Fatai.

According to the statement, all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers have been directed to ensure strict compliance with the directive within their respective jurisdictions.

The police warned that any vehicle found violating the order would be impounded and subjected to thorough investigation in accordance with existing laws and established procedures.

“The Command wishes to assure members of the public that this enforcement exercise is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding motorists,” the statement read.

“Rather, it is a proactive security measure designed to enhance the capacity of Police operatives to identify vehicles, investigate crimes, track criminal suspects, and strengthen the overall security architecture of the State.”

The command urged motorists, transport operators, and fleet owners to ensure that their vehicles display valid, duly issued, and clearly visible registration number plates at all times.

Vehicle owners were also advised to keep all relevant documentation current and readily available for inspection whenever required by law enforcement officers.

Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding residents and visitors, the police said the operation forms part of broader efforts to improve security and facilitate effective policing across Lagos.

“The Command remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting lives and property and creating a safer environment for all residents and visitors in the State,” the statement added.

The police further called on members of the public to support the initiative by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious persons, vehicles, or activities through designated emergency channels, stressing that effective policing depends on active cooperation between security agencies and the public.

The enforcement exercise comes amid ongoing efforts by security authorities to curb criminal activities and enhance the ability of law enforcement agencies to identify and track vehicles linked to criminal operations throughout the state.
