Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has disclosed that the Lagos Red Line Rail will transport over 500,000 passengers daily when fully operational, significantly boosting mobility across Lagos.
The governor revealed that 24 newly acquired coaches from China will strengthen the state’s rail capacity and provide relief for commuters. He added that the Red Line will operate eight-car trains-double the capacity of the four-car trains currently in use on the Lagos Blue Line Rail.
Speaking during an interview at Lagos House, Marina, Sanwo-Olu said the 27-kilometre corridor from Oyingbo to Agbado is designed to support about 37 trips daily, forming a key part of the state’s integrated transport strategy.
He further disclosed that discussions are underway to extend the rail line beyond Lagos into Ogun State, in line with broader regional mobility plans.
The governor also highlighted progress on the Omi-Eko water transport initiative, noting that high-capacity electric boats are expected by 2027 to complement rail and road networks.
According to him, the integration of rail, road, and waterways under the state’s multimodal transport system will improve efficiency, enhance productivity, and drive economic growth.
He reaffirmed that similar investments previously made on the Blue Line are being replicated on the Red Line to ensure a more robust and reliable rail infrastructure for the state.
